Wool pattern wefts in slit tapestry weave on wool. Avar kilims from the northern Caucasus are typically woven in wider kellegi formats, making this piece quite rare. The abrashed denim blue field displays a 'bug' cartouche pattern in black, cream, and deep rose. The deep rose border features stylized flowers, smooth, stiff vinery, and abstract turtle palmettes, all in black. Nothing quite resembles an Avar, and very few pile rugs are known. Avars have only recently gained recognition and appreciation.
