A wool pile in asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Taking off from classic Persian animal and jungle carpets, this well-woven piece shows a straw field supporting lions, tigers, leopards, wild asses, peacocks and other birds, animal combats, and serpents, in a landscape of wind-blown trees with rocky bases, shrubs, leaves, cloud bands and palmettes. Bitonal main border with reciprocal lappets in old gold and navy with cloud bands and pairs of birds of various species. Border is derived from that on the16th century “Chelsea Carpet” in the V & A Museum in London.
