A wool pile with symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Portiere rugs of any origin are exceedingly rare and typically made as special commissions. This well-woven example features a border adapted from Ghiordes prayer rugs, showcasing the distinctive “apple” design on a sand-colored ground. The minor borders are adorned with sprays of leaves and berries, along with upright palmettes. A blue panel appears above the spandrels, which display a round palmette motif, while the beige spandrels feature repeating leaf and berry modules. The central field is empty, culminating in a sharply pointed top. Narrow plainweave finishes appear at the top edge and the base of the “legs.”
