Closely adapted from a photograph, this extremely finely knotted urban rug from Tabriz displays a realistic standing lion glancing to the right. Colors, fur texture, and leonine attitude have been authentically replicated. The black background effectively silhouettes the ‘King of Beasts.’ The simulation of photographic subjects in Persian rugs with up to 1000 knots per square inch is a more recent artistic innovation.
