A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This is a room-size version of a 16th-century Persian 'jungle' or 'paradise park' carpet, set on a crimson ground and featuring green cypresses, verdantly flowering trees, and a millefleurs dispersion of rosettes. The design also includes senmurvs in the corners, prowling snow leopards, small flying birds, and knotted blue cloud bands. The ecru border is adorned with complex, compound palmettes linked by cloud bands and strapwork. The original archetypal long carpets are now housed in museums, and this piece was adapted from an illustration in the 1923 Sarre and Trenkwald carpet book.
