Vintage Persian Bakhtiari Pictorial Rug

No. 13279
Persia, 1962
2 ft. 6 in. x 3 ft.
(0.76 x 0.91 m)

A vintage Persian Bakhtiari pictorial rug. The ancient Achaemenid site of Persepolis in southern Iran has stone reliefs with a hero slaying composite mythological beasts. The designs go even farther back to Assyrian times. Here the royal protagonist stabs a standing, winged lion on a bright red ground. An inscription and date are set above. The date reads 1240, but really should be 1340 (probably 1962). The lion-capital columns on the sides are taken right from those remaining at the main palace site.
