Vintage Persian Tabriz Pictorial Zodiac Accent Carpet

A wool pile in symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This is a finely woven pictorial with four scenes of old mosques and other buildings from around Tabriz, and a central scene of an old man under a tree contemplating young love. Zodiac roundels surround the central scene. Peasants and workers toil in front of the ruins. Achaemenid figures converge on vases in the upper and lower borders, and tall pillars run up the sides of the near black border. Corner half-length figures and others in cartouches in the central axis. A pastiche of Persianizing scenes combined into an exotic effect. A wall hanging rather than a floor piece.
