An antique East Turkestan Khotan Saph runner. A mosque runner for very skinny people. Each panel of this east Turkestan oasis specialty town rug displays a pointed prayer niche with a floral “tree of life”. The sections are in goldenrod, red, rose and mauve. One postulant per niche. By the early 20th century, saphs were woven for export sale as much as for local use. Hence the niches did not have to actually be functional.
