A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The red field of this close interpretation of a 16th-century Persian design features lions, spotted deer, and kylins with flaming joints. An in-and-out palmette pattern is adorned with serpentine cloud bands, arabesque vine work, and smaller palmettes. The sand-colored border showcases palmettes linked by broad strap work. This piece is probably copied from the 1892 'Vienna Book' of classical carpets.
