A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a wool foundation. While pictorial Indian rugs have existed for centuries, it is relatively rare to find a c.1900 carpet with a pictorial pattern. In this example, the wine-red field features a mélange of lions, tigers, bears, ungulates, wading and other birds, a cobra, monkeys, a diminutive horseback hunter, and various human figures. An abrashed partial blue stream with fish and a native gharial adds to the scene. The slate-blue main border depicts a mix of monkeys, deer, chipmunks, lions, and birds. An exceptionally amusing carpet.
