A wool pile with asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Clearly a bespoke piece, this exceptionally proportioned carpet features a richly abrashed slate field adorned with a rendition of the Mustafi design, showcasing volutes, partial wreaths, and bouquets. The Mustafi design was especially popular with Mahal and Bidjar weavers around 1900. The rust-colored main border displays palmettes embraced by a broken meander, while the cream-colored minors feature geometric leaves.
