An antique Turkish Oushak carpet. This is a rare, giant design sampler carpet with quarters of two medallions and snippets of main and secondary borders. The patterns indicate a later 19th century origin for this unique and totally asymmetric long carpet. The weave is particularly coarse, making it easier for the weavers to follow the pattern. Oushak samplers are very uncommon. The weavers worked from samplers rather than scale paper or other patterns.
