Vintage Egyptian Pictorial Rug

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The overall ecru field depicts, below, the Weighing of the Soul of the deceased on a central scale flanked by Anubis, Thoth, and other divine figures. Lines of descriptive hieroglyphs appear above the scene. An upper panel of seated gods holding ankhs observes the event, while Osiris is shown at the right in a separate panel, enthroned and delivering final judgment. A narrow plain black border frames the frieze-like composition. As is typical for this type, the weaving is executed on a short warp.
