A vintage Persian Mahal carpet. A version of the “Harshang” (crab) palmette pattern appears on the soft salmon field of this west Persian village Mahal, enclosed neatly by a rust palmette main border.  The field pattern is balanced side to side, but not at the top/bottom. On all sides it passes under the borders, giving it a potentially infinite character, as is intended in the best of the classic Persian allover patterns. This rug goes with anything, from the most informal to the very high style.
