Antique Persian Bidjar Room Size Carpet

No. 29237
Persia, Early 20th Century
8 ft. 2 in. x 12 ft. 5 in.
(2.47 x 3.75 m)

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The near black field presents a bold version of the “Garrus design” of rust red geometric split arabesques, with palmettes and floret sprays in the defined reserves. Garrus was a town near Bidjar, but it was leveled in WWI and the weavers took their designs and looms to Bidjar just up the road. The slate strip style border shows palmettes enclosing arabesques. Robust and solidly woven. Cotton foundations replaced wool after WWI. Resilient, high quality Kurdish tribal wool.
