A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This is a giant and effective enlargement of the field of a 17th century “Vase carpet” with three columns of huge slanted and upstanding petal, squared, and ragged palmettes, some with cloud bands within and others in square sub-grounds, all on a rich red ground, in shades of gold ochre, light blue, pale green, rust and cream and supported by millefleurs stems. Main strip style border with ecru, red, ochre and chocolate in a four level strapwork. Ecru minors with rosettes. Outstanding, striking piece with great artistic quality and high pile.
