A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Mashad is the seat of Khorassan Province in Persia, and this extra-large piece almost certainly comes from a workshop in that city. The red field shows a 3/2/3..pattern of roundel medallions on a close, allover ecru sand pattern of stems, florets, etc. The medallion each have 16 ogival pendants embedded in the basic pattern. The chocolate main border shows a classic design of scalloped roundels and cartouches, with cloud bands within and outside the pattern. This gigantic carpet is emblematic of the special pieces attempted by the leading Mashad shops of the time.
