A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This extraordinary pictorial follows very closely the “Carpet Seller” painting of the Orientalist artist Jean Gerome, depicting a group of connoisseurs visiting a Cairo carpet shop and contemplating a Safavid Sangusko group white ground medallion piece hanging from a balcony. In the foreground are rumpled Caucasian rugs of the 19th century. A classic painting and an exceptional rendition in the knotted pile medium. Taken from a book illustration. Extremely fine.
