Escutcheons, open, closed and broken, horizontal and vertical, are an essential part of the dense allover ivory and sienna brown pattern on the light blue-grey field, set within sienna-brick borders with a turtle palmette pattern in this well-woven urban NW Persian factory carpet. Most older Tabriz extra larg carpets were woven in factories with ranks of professional artisans rather than home shops employing family and friends.
