An antique Persian Mashad Pictorial carpet. This urban carpet draws on classical sources for its elaborately rendered fauna of dragons, chi’lins, phoenixes, pheasants, and deer in both the field and in the scenic vignette cartouche border. The arabesque pattern in the black field, medallion and corners are dizzyingly complex. The weave is very fine, the design is biaxially symmetric and complex, and the colors are rich and saturated. This carpet is so vital that it furnishes a room by itself, just add a few cushions.
